Kathy O'RourkeFall 2009 Reflections from
Tapestry Yoga Center Director Kathy O'Rourke

This fall, Tapestry Yoga Center opens its doors with a full schedule of classes, an exciting line-up of teachers, and the promise of something extraordinary.

It has been just 2 years since I moved to Viroqua. I joke that I was airlifted out of my perfectly lovely homemaker/yoga teacher life in suburban Washington, DC, to the life of my dreams in Viroqua. It is a wonderful and very cool story just how quickly and powerfully that happened, but suffice it to say for now, that I, like so many other people in the Driftless Area, just found myself drawn to live here with my family in a way that can best be described as destiny — pulled inexorably into the Viroqua Vortex.

I love it here: the people, the potlucks, the farmers' market, the schools. It is perfection to me to have so much to do with just 4,400 people's worth of traffic and hustle bustle. There was just one thing I yearned for — a yoga center. The one thing that I want to take from my old life to truly bring life here to perfection: a full-fledged yoga center with lots of classes, friendly, dynamic teachers, and a host of familiar faces that comprises a community — a spiritual community center. From this vision, the Tapestry Yoga Center is growing in Viroqua.

Starting September 20th, you have a place to make your own; a place to practice moving and breathing in your body in an expansive way. There are 15 classes on our inaugural schedule — 10 of them are yoga classes from 4 teachers in 4 unique styles. There are also classes in Belly Dance, Nia and Tai Chi — other movement practices that link to the rhythms of breath and energy. Our amazing practitioners bring years of dedicated practice to their craft and offer enthusiasm and mastery to their classes.

Our studio is in the historic Landmark Center (across from the auditorium) in room 203 — a very spacious 924 square feet with room to move and a gorgeous, mature maple tree outside the window. The floors are shined, the walls are painted peaceful colors, and the cubbies are full of eco-friendly yoga props to make your practice just right for you — blankets, belts, blocks, mats, bolsters, and eye bags to support your body moving in and out of postures and resting comfortably lying down in savasana at the end of yoga class.

There is much to discover here — "What style of yoga do I like? What teacher has the personality that fits with me? What are all these classes with funny names: Vinyasa Flow? Nia? Yoga Nidra? Tai Chi?" Well, come out and see. Most of the classes are expressly geared toward beginners (unless noted) and presume that everyone will be starting at the beginning. I (personally) plan to be at the Belly Dance and Nia classes (in the back of the room) — trying something totally new, a little scary, a bit outside the four corners of my yoga mat. This is a safe place to blend in, figure out what works for your body, and have fun.

You can try all of the classes for FREE — fifteen free classes from September 20th to 26th. Clear your schedule and come to every class we offer! Give yourself the gift of time to be present in your body — to move and then be still. Let everything else pause for an hour or ninety minutes while you step into these ancient arts and experience how thoroughly relevant they are to modern life. Step into the experience and reflect on how things are going and how you might want to proceed on your journey.

The ancient sages use the image of a tapestry to describe the journey of life. A tapestry is woven from fibers to create an intricate pattern. The quality of the fibers that make up the threads, the richness of the dye, and the care of the weaver all combine to determine the quality of the pattern of the fabric — of the tapestry that is our life — our unique expression.

Join us and explore the multitude of classes from a wide range of traditions and weave them into the life you are creating here in this extraordinary place.

Namaste,
Kathy
